Race a speed boat

We have done another experiment. and this time we are trying to move a boat through the water with out touching it.

Race a Speedboat
Can you make a paper boat race across the water just by gently touching the surface of the water?
Hypothesis
It will work because when you touch water it makes ripples and the soap bubbles should push the boat along.

Materials
Coloured card, washing up liquid, pencil or sharpie, scissors, large container of water.

Method
  1. cut out a boat shape a piece of paper.
  2. then put a bit of dishwashing liquid on your finger
  3. place the piece of paper in the water
  4. place your finger in the water
  5. the boat should move
Observation
When we put our fingers in the water, the boats moved.

Conclusion
the dish washing liquid changes the weakens the tension on the surface behind the boat and the strong in front pulls it ford

Short Experiment to Follow Up
Make Metal Float
Gently place a paperclip on the water’s surface.

Hypothesis It will float

Observation we placed the paper clip in carefully and stayed a float.

Conclusion
The paper clip created an air bubble the kept it afloat.
