My Top House Recount

Mon 24th Feb 2014

Last Friday at school we had a top house competition. The top house competition is when all the Houses (Teams (Tui, Kea, Takahe, Hoiho and Pukeko)  compete against each other for house points that are added up at the end of the year. I was the leader of my team we were Tui 3. One of the games was pass the baton. We started at a cone and had to pass the baton along shoulder to shoulder. As soon as we had passed the baton on we had to run to the other end of the line and have another turn. We had to keep doing that again and again until we got to the other cone. There was another game that was half a three legged race half cricket. We had to  walked (3 legged) to a cone and from the cone we had to throw a ball at the cricket wicket. We did ok at that game but I don’t think we won. My favorite game was the first game. We had to throw medium sized inflatable jacks (spiky ball things) into a bucket. We did really well, we got more than thirty. I haven’t heard the results yet and don’t know who won but it sure was fun.

Hearing asscotion

13/2/14

Yesterday we went to see Carolyn from the Hastings Hearing association who talked to us  about how easy it is to damage your ears. She told us three different ways to protect our ear: cover, walk away, or turn it down. Carolyn did some experiments with us. She told us that sound was vibration she showed us how strong vibration can be. We used tuning forks for this we banged them on the ground and held a ping pong ball on the side. The vibration in the tuning fork made the ball knock against the side, we didn't need to move it the vibration did it for us. She Taught us about  the three smallest bones in our body. One was called the cochlea and it is filled with thousands tiny hairs. The hairs wiggle around when their fell vibration (sound). But if the vibration is too strong (Sound is too loud) they snap and you lose a bit of you're hearing. Carolyn demonstrated with pipe cleaners. We brushed our hands over them to make. We went through a normal day but then we pretended to go to the fireworks and the pipe cleaners were all bent. Then Carolyn told us the things that were safe and for how long. And that's what I learnt when we listened to Carolyn from the Hastings Hearing association.

Totara hub logo art

This year our school has been split up into groups called hubs. I am in Totara Hub. In our hub we have room 7,5 and my class room 6. We are having a competition to see who can make the best logo design. Mr Cottrell has designed half of the logo for us and we are doing the rest. Here is mine.

The koru represents The Maori culture in the school.
The smiley faces are for enjoyment.
The big tree on the side is the Parkvale School logo.
The other trees are Totara trees.
The silver ferns are for NZ.
