sea vent summary

Kiwi Kids News - news that is out of this world

A group of UK Scientists have found the deepest ever group of sea vents.
The vents, which are like underwater chimneys, spurt out dark water at the bottom of the Caribbean Sea. Officially they are called Hydrothermal Vents and people didn’t know they existed until 40 years ago.
But dont think you will be able to see these vents as they are located around 5km below the water surface!
The vents were discovered using a state of art ship that monitors the ocean bed using a special submarine.
The ship, named after famous explorer James Cook, contains the very latest technology that allows scientists to study further down than ever before.
And one of the most amazing discoveries has been of the 10 metre high chimneys that spill out warm water.
So far, around the world, around 200 groups of vents have been found. These ones in the Caribbean are the deepest.
